Professional background

I’ve worked in personal insurance for two decades. I have a Commerce Degree and I’ve worked with the ATO, in commercial sales and I’ve also had my own business as a manufacturer’s agent for almost a decade.  I actually got into the insurance industry as my previous financial advisor said I would be a good fit for personal insurance. I like helping people, I like figures, and I like sales.

Key area of specialisation

My favourite clients are tradies. Tradies are normally great in their skillsets and jobs – whether they are plumbers, carpenters, electricians, tilers or plasterers – but they are time poor.

Tradies generally know what they want and they want it now. They hate paperwork and that’s what I’m great at. They are looking for someone who knows what they are doing, can sort the insurances quickly and efficiently. Most importantly, they need you to be there if they need to make a claim and that’s what I do. I always believe that if a tradie trusts you and you do the right thing, you have a client for life.

Describe how you have helped a client that made you a great partner to the client

I always say to clients: “ Insurance is like a parachute – if you do not have it when you need it, then it is too late!”

Many of my clients are tradies and injuries are common with them. This is normally not at work but rather during their time off or at their pastimes. I can recall many clients who have had claims while doing some activity on a weekend. It could be surfing, riding a scooter, gardening, trail bike or mountain bike riding.

I’ve also helped my clients through medical traumas such as cancer, stroke or heart attacks. This is why I believe insurance is essential for injuries and critical illnesses  so you can keep your businesses running with money while you recover.

Mainly Southeast Queensland but I also have clients from Hobart to Darwin.

One thing you would like clients to think about when it comes to life insurance

When I think about Income Protection and Trauma Insurance, I would say to clients “Don’t think it will not happen to you” – some clients may never claim, but I have also had injury claims within two months of the policy being taken out. With critical illness claims, the unexpected can happen. You do not have to be old, fat and grey to have cancer or a critical illness.

Your approach to general advice when you work with clients

Under the general advice model, I cannot recommend specific sums of insurance or strategies. However, I can give general advice on covers available including factual information.

I find clients generally have an idea of what they want, how much they wish to be covered for, and how much they want to pay.  They want a solution that will offer them peace of mind if something goes pear shaped.

With general advice I can quote them for a possible solution from a panel of ten insurers available through Sustainable Life Solutions. If a client is happy with one of these solutions, I can use the technology driven general platform to get the policy rolling pretty quickly.
